In this video, Sherry Turkle, author Reclaiming the Conversation, describes our present reality as one where,  “we would rather text than talk”

Worse still, Turkle has found:

  • 89% of people surveyed took out a smartphone during their most recent interactions with others and of those, 82% said that the quality of their discussion suffered
  • There has been a 40% decline in empathy in the last 20 years among college students, most of that occurring in the last 10 years, due to the presence of devices

Sadly, the impact of technology on human relationships is such that it is dehumanising them – quite simply, technology cannot demonstrate empathy and this makes it almost impossible to build trust

To start to reclaim the humanity in our relationships, Sherry suggests we must, “look up, look at each other and start a conversation”
