Last week I was in Brisbane speaking at a leadership conference about the performance imperative of having happy and engaged workers – I said that such employees make better decisions, show highers levels of customer service, collaborate and innovate far more, make less mistakes and produce work of much higher quality. On top of this, engaged employees put in more effort and are more productive.
But here is the kicker, the fastest route to this desired state of productivity, performance and profit is better quality leadership – more than 70% of an employee’s sense of their engagement and satisfaction with their job, comes down to what the leader does – how the leader leads the team.
What’s more, in these times of rapid change, building leadership muscle is not optional but essential. In fact, the more uncertain our world becomes, the more people will look to leaders for direction and clarity and; research shows that when times get tough, the quality of leadership is the strongest predictor of business success.
The bottom line is: employee engagement predicts employee performance. For this reason, creating a workplace that promotes employee engagement, isn’t just a nice to have, it is a performance imperative.
Here is a timely article on how employee happiness predicts employee performance.
